Adelaide Hills Community Legend
In 2025, the title of Adelaide Hills Council Citizen of the Year has been bestowed upon Des Chabrel, a resident of Oakbank and a dedicated technical volunteer with Technology for Ageing and Disability SA (TADSA). This prestigious recognition highlights Des’s unwavering commitment to enhancing the lives of individuals with disabilities and promoting health and fitness within his community. For over three decades, Des has been an integral part of the Adelaide Hills community, dedicating himself to various initiatives that foster mobility and independence.

For the past 15 years, Des has volunteered with TADSA, a not-for-profit organization focused on creating custom solutions for people with disabilities who require specialized equipment that is often unavailable commercially. Utilizing his expertise in civil engineering, he has modified bicycles and other mobility devices to empower users by improving their ability to navigate their environments. His work exemplifies innovation in addressing challenges faced by those with disabilities—transforming obstacles into opportunities for joy and independence.
Des’s contributions extend beyond TADSA; he actively engages in several sport and recreation organizations including Tribe Triathlon Club, Charleston Park Run, and Adelaide Harriers Club. His holistic approach to community service demonstrates a commitment not only to physical activity but also to fostering an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive.
In discussing his involvement with TADSA, Des reflects on how he was drawn into this vital work through a friend whose child faced significant mobility challenges. This personal connection ignited a passion within him—a passion that manifests in the smiles of children who experience newfound freedom through cycling thanks to his modifications. As he humbly accepts this accolade, he recognizes it as an acknowledgment not just of his efforts but as part of a collaborative endeavor involving over 50 volunteers committed to making meaningful changes in people’s lives.
Des Chabrel’s legacy is one defined by compassion and ingenuity—qualities that truly embody the essence of being recognized as a “legend” within his community.
