Improving Safety & Independence With One-Handed Mobility Support
This client relies on a four‑wheeled walker (4WW) for mobility due to gait changes associated with dementia. However, missing digits on his left hand meant he was unable to operate both walker brakes safely. Standard walkers require two‑handed brake use, placing him at increased risk of falls and causing him to rely heavily on caregivers for mobility support.
To address this, a one‑handed brake system was manufactured and installed on the right‑hand side of his existing “My Mobility” walker. The modification allows a single right‑hand lever to engage both brakes at once, ensuring balanced and reliable stopping without requiring a new walker.
The brake cable system was carefully adjusted and tensioned, followed by functional testing to confirm safe and consistent performance.
As a result, the client can now mobilise more safely and confidently, with reduced fall risk and greater independence — supporting both his wellbeing and dignity while easing the demands on his caregivers.
