Relocate Electric Wheelchair Controller

Our client's family purchased a new electric wheelchair with reclining backrest in the hope they will be able to take their much-loved mother and grandmother for outings in the local community. One hitch, the controller needed to be relocated to enable attendant control.

Switch from user to attendant control

The electric ‘Equipmed’ wheelchair had a standard joystick control located in the standard position on the right arm of the chair. It was located on a shaped tube that was able to be adjusted forward and backward. Fortunately, there was enough length in its wiring to reach to the new position and hence our technical expert Bruce was able to slide the tube from its mount, saw it in two, fill the edges and reinsert the rubber stop. He then rotated the mount holding that arm to the controller via the two M4 metal threads and reattached it in a 180deg angle to the original position. Using a clamp salvaged from a bicycle triathlete handlebar he was able to clamp this bar to the little handlebar on the back of the wheelchair. The result seemed satisfactory with a capble tie to keep the cable away from the tire.
